There was so much good stuff in this email from Acoustic Guitar Magazine I just posted the whole thing - they’re going to try to sell you stuff, but I’m not making any money off of it - even the sponsored link about humidifying your acoustic looked interesting:
I like websites that are unabashedly trying to sell you stuff to feed your gear addiction, but have some pretty helpful articles to go along with it. I’m a fan of Carvin stuff (I dig their vintage amps and speaker cabs found on Reverb) but I’m not making money off of them either. Good tips in this article:
A couple of podcasts from Songtown. Look interesting but as I’ve said before, I just can’t sit still through podcasts:
Songtown Podcast - 5 Things For Younger "Me"
Reasonably brief, but important subject, especially for guitarists just starting out. A video about making chord changes interesting. Changing chords on the beat is a milestone for guitarists in the early stages of the journey, but once you get that timing down, take your playing to the next level by adding cool stuff to the space around the chord change. All of it is counting and timing to the beat, lyrical phrasing and meter, but if you can stick a cool little flourish in as you change chords, your audience may not know exactly why it sounded cool, but it did, and YOU’LL know why!
Mr. Tony Van Veen makes some of the most informative YouTube videos around. Yep, he wants you to use CD Baby and Disc Makers, but the free advice is spot on. Another company that doesn’t pay me, but the informative videos by its CEO are great stuff!
Okay - this is extravagant even for me on “Link” day - it’s a link to….. more links! But, there are lots of cool things that we’ve talked about before on Michael Acoustic that you can dive a little deeper into here. Some examples - you have to get past the opening Beatles insights, unless you’re into Beatles insights - to get to things like basslines, lyricist tips, changing the mediant (-iii) chord to a Major chord for an unexpected sound (yes, break those rules!!), songs with only one or two chords, using suspended and extended chords (which fits nicely with the passing chords link above), and a ton of songwriting tips, tricks, how-tos, and why-tos. Great stuff here!!
Tomorrow we’re back to regular posts without links, see you then!
Cheers and keep playing!!
