I usually group links by the source where I found the link (though it’s actually almost always the other way around - the links find me through emails, but details, whatev…). Since it’s January, there are lots of “what to do this year” types of articles, most of which seem like “what I should have been doing all along” types of articles. They’re probably correct from either viewpoint. So I’m grouping those together today, they’ll follow the one I really want to highlight, and then on to the other stuff.
Jeff Beck And A Bunch Of Guitar Stories - we noted the sad news of Mr. Beck’s passing and though he didn’t have much to say about acoustic guitars, that’s fine - he lived his musical life on his own terms. This article has a bit of everything and a lot of hilarity in stories about how guitars passed through his and others’ lives and back again. A little long, but definitely a great read about a legendary life and the guitars that were part of it.
So the 2023 “what to do and why aren’t I already doing them?” links here:
This one is from Mr. Tony Van Veen, who’s articles and videos I often share on here. The title of today’s post derives in part from this link because Mr. Van Veen links to his own links in it. Very clever, Mr. Van Veen, too clever by half. I’m soooo jealous….
Next, from Carvin Audio, another sort of a cornucopia of linkception in the links to other articles below the main article. They’re doing it right, and not just because the preamp and DI box I ordered solved a lot of signal chain issues for me this week (and they, like every other link on here, didn’t even pay me to say that!).
And some other more or less random but helpful things from around the music world:
I link to Mr. Griff Hamlin a lot, though he’s pretty much a classic blues guitar player and doesn’t stray a lot into my favored genres of Americana and country, but the basics are important to all of them and he does a good job of conveying that:
Next, from the CD Baby DIY Musician blog, some things to consider when you’re ready to release your own music:
Promote And Release Your Music
I link to Mr. Graham English somewhat less than other sources, mostly because his emails are usually heavy on sales pitch and less frequently as informational as others. That said, he is the author of a handy book, “Logic Pro For Dummies”, and that title has applied to me more than I care to think about these past few weeks. This one is good information for songwriters, and there’s some linkception here too, but I’m not sure if the included links are to other information or sales pitches. Adventure awaits….
From Acoustic Guitar Magazine, a way to add interest to chord progressions with “slash chords” (think G/B or D/F#, rather than swordplay or a certain guitar player…)
Finally for today, something we don’t think about much, but if you are about to release your own music, you’ll need cover art - both for streaming services and CDs/vinyl. Better to think of it sooner or later.
Regular post tomorrow!
Cheers and keep playing!
