Links and "It's Odds and Ends" And Something Completely Different!
In addition, I address the rumours of some sort of sporting contest tonight...
Let’s get to it - first some YouTube videos (okay, “some” doesn’t even begin to describe it! Lotsa videos and “videoception” - even some of the articles are pretty dependent on embedded videos. Sheesh!). But even more first is the disclaimer (easily identified as the, wait for it….):
Disclaimer: This SubStack is free, always will be, and I receive no compensation or other benefit (except the unsolicited, occasional, and much appreciated shoutout from readers and other SubStackers!) from any of the people or companies I link to or write about.

For this first one, I’ll admit I’m not well versed (or even versed, for that matter) on understanding or using modes. Here’s part of the reason:
“Its most common use may be described as a type of musical scale coupled with a set of characteristic melodic and harmonic behaviors. It is applied to major and minor keys as well as the seven diatonic modes” Credit: Wikipedia
Link for the brave among us: Modes
Still, this is interesting:
From Disc Makers, Mr. Van Veen, who makes CDs, will tell us why to sell our music on CDs (that’s a bit snarky - I really like Mr. Van Veen’s videos and they are always interesting and informative, and ya gotta get your merch CDs somewhere…)
Songtown is a favorite source for me and these are all good things:
Writing For Publishers - What are they looking for?
Myths About Impossibilities in Songwriting - Everything that can go wrong might just be stuff that won’t actually go wrong…
Rewriting Lyrics - Or at least revisit them often, and if you laugh or cry too much, might be a good time for a rewrite…
Mr. Griff Hamlin has been on fire lately with some great stuff (lots of videoception here, some of these are light on written content, heavy on an embedded video, still…)
Don't Suffer Needlessly - Doubts? No thanks, just had some…
Picking or Slurring My guitar instructor would call this technique a “dawdle”, it’s basically just hammer-ons/pull offs from a different perspective, one of timing and technique for the interesting effects, rather than just arpeggiating a chord.
"Real" Keys vs Blues Keys - this is cool
Mastery Is Overrated But that doesn’t mean sloth and procrastination are acceptable, apparently, so no happy ending to this article…
From ASCAP, the folks who will collect your royalties for public performances of your works, unless you’re affiliated for that purpose with BMI or SESAC or someone else…
Criticism CRITICISM, Ugh! Good God, y’all, what is it good for? Find out how to deal here.
A couple of links from Carvin Audio - Yes, they’re in the business of selling stuff and I’ll admit I have a bunch of that stuff - of both kinds, country and western err,...vintage and new production… (Ed. - where would our culture be now without quotes from movies featuring SNL cast members? Poorer for the wanting, I think… ).
And now for…..
SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!:
Cat Calling Not sure if this will work if you’re not on Instagram, but it made me laugh out loud for real…
It’s Odds And Ends:
Today in our ongoing Thursday series, “It’s Odds And Ends”, about bands or artists or others in the music industry who may be a bit obscure or out of the mainstream for whatever reason, we feature the band “Hum”, as suggested by one of our readers:
(Ed. Suggest a band or artist that you feel hasn’t gotten the credit they deserve in the comment section.)

Hum is an American alternative rock band from Champaign, Illinois, United States. They are best known for their 1995 radio hit "Stars". After initially disbanding in 2000, Hum was largely inactive (save for sporadic performances) until reuniting in 2015 for a series of short tours. On June 23, 2020, the band announced and released Inlet, their first album of new material in over twenty-two years.
Influence
Hum has been cited as an influence by multiple groups and artists, including Chino Moreno of Deftones,[31] Deafheaven,[23] and Stemage.[32]”

Rumour Issue (British spelling is fancy…)
I wish to address something that’s come up: The Gonzaga University football team claims to be undefeated since 1948 (I have a t-shirt that purports to further this claim). While technically true, the facts behind the claim reveal Gonzaga University has not actually had a football team since 1948. So.
They do, however have a spectacular basketball team that will appear for the eighth straight year in tonight’s Sweet Sixteen game at 6:45PM Pacific DST, on CBS against some other team. As an alumni, I believe there is some law or other legal requirement that requires I convey this information. Or something.
Also this image is probably copyrighted or whatever, so Credit: Gonzaga University
Regular post tomorrow!!
Cheers and keep playing!
