Yesterday’s Bonus Round: “Shoegaze (originally called shoegazing and sometimes conflated with "dream pop")[10][2] is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume.[1][11] It emerged in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the late 1980s among neo-psychedelic groups[2] who usually stood motionless during live performances in a detached, non-confrontational state.[1][12] The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts.[13]”
Shoegaze is a term that kinda comes from two ideas - standing in place and staring at the floor/shoes while swaying to and lost in, the music, and guitarists on stage concentrating on which distortion pedals on the pedalboard at their feet while they were working to produce loud and often discordant guitar tones.
Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” is representative of the dream pop side of shoegaze, while bands like My Bloody Valentine and Lush were known for the volume and distortion heavy guitars that often overwhelmed the lyrics/vocalist.
Pretty difficult week, a lot of sorrow and anger. A time for reflection and contemplation and I think for many, prayer.
With a long Memorial Day weekend upon us and a lot to think about, today might be a good day to just let things be a bit.
So no Bonus Round this week, I’ll see you back here next week with the hope of better days.
Cheers and keep playing!
