Last week’s Bonus Round: Joe Walsh’s 1978 release of the song “Life’s Been Good” contains the lyric: “So I got me an office, gold records on the wall
Just leave a message, maybe I'll call”
Tomorrow we’ll continue to explore the idea of “I’ve written a song, what now?” We talked a bit last week about copyrighting your song, and the importance of a Performing Rights Organization (PRO) affiliation. We also introduced the idea of “metadata” for your works. We’ll expand on that a tomorrow and add a couple of other things to consider - a “Publishing Administrator” service if you self publish, and a “Distributor” to get your songs placed if you’re not under contract with a label. Also, what does “under contract with a label” mean?
Some housekeeping and future events items. I know some stuff, but by no means am I an “expert”. So, beginning today, I’ll include at least one link to an article (I’m going to stay away from YouTube/TikTok videos and podcasts) by people who are experts, or at least have something valuable to say. You’ll find these just before the Bonus Rounds. I’m also going to be doing more guest interviews and posts by guest writers. Not every week, but more often. I’ll let you know a week ahead of time when those are coming up. For instance, next week’s two posts - the Thursday teaser and the Friday main post will be (in two parts) my interview (via email) with Brad Kyle, a fellow SubStack writer who authors: bradkyle.substack.com:
Brad is a fellow who was “there” (and kinda everywhere) for a really interesting time in music and a whole bunch of other things. He’s interviewed and hung out with some of the biggest names from the era. I urge you to visit his SubStack before next week for some fascinating and really cool stuff!!
Today’s “Link To An Expert”: Max Martin
Bonus Round: A 1970 song, written by someone else, but a hit for this famous female singer. As always, the clue is in today’s subtitle!!
See you tomorrow!
Cheers, and keep playing!!
Michael Acoustic
Nice, Michael! I love how you're covering the often mystifying land of copyrighting, publishing, and the rest! I know it'll be helpful to those for whom those topics are hard to find and "grok"! Looking forward to hearing from that Brad fella!😉
