Last Friday’s Bonus Round: On the famous sitcom “Friends”, one of my favorite rockers, Chrissie Hynde, played a character (a coffee house acoustic guitarist/singer) named “Stephanie Schiffer [sp?]” as introduced by Jennifer Anniston’s character. In character, “Stephanie” introduced the song as one she had written for “the first man (she) had ever loved”. In reality, the song “Angel Of The Morning” was written by Chip Taylor and was a hit in 1968 for Merrilee Rush on her album named for the song, released that same year.
Last week we talked about approaching “practice” on the guitar as “rehearsal” for actually performing the song, even if you never intend to (though I highly encourage that - even if it’s just for a friend or your guitar instructor or a group you jam with). Tomorrow we’ll revisit some places you can find songs to rehearse, in more depth than we went into in a previous post (you can find that at Michael Acoustic archive - it’s the post from Oct 1, 2021). We’ll walk through the various apps I recommend, with screenshots, and find a song to print in chord chart form to rehearse.
Standard disclosure: I have no financial interest or association with the people or their businesses who appear in the following links, as always, it’s the other way around mostly - I buy some of their products, but I don’t own stock or have a contract with, or any other sort of business arrangement with any of them (unless I’m a paid subscriber). I present them for educational purposes only, and am not endorsing, promoting, or recommending them in any way.
Link To An Expert: Here’s Part 2 of a series by Mr. Tony van Veen, CEO of Disc Makers, a company that will make CDs and vinyl records of music you produce. Part 1 had to do with the $424M in black box royalties, this one is about the Mechanical Licensing Collective.
Interesting: Griff Hamlin is a blues guitarist who publishes books and instructional videos on, wait for it…blues guitar! This one is for “advanced beginners” to intermediate players. It’s not a lesson, it’s some things to think about when you’re in that place in your journey. A little long (28 min), but if nothing else, check out points 5, 6, and 7 of the discussion. The whole thing is great information!
Shedding The Beginner’s Mindset
Finally, an article from American Songwriter magazine about pitching your songs to an A&R (Artists & Repertoire) manager at a record label or publisher.
Bonus Round: an acoustic song (mostly) by a veteran male country singer/songwriter joined by an equally famous veteran female singer/songwriter!!
See you tomorrow!!
Cheers, and keep playing!!
