I don’t do “Special Editions” very often, but this one really is special, and I felt it needed more than inclusion in the “Other Voices” section of my posts. One of my subscribers, Mr. Nic Briscoe, has just finished a four part series of posts regarding his involvement and experiences with the group WHAM!, and his time as an audio engineer during the recording of some of their music, as well as his own musical career. It’s an extraordinary account of an insider’s look into a hectic, exciting, and sometimes painful time spent in “the biz”in the UK (and other interesting places!). Mr. Briscoe’s writing is personal and frank and illuminating all at once. I’m blown away by the story and I think it needs to be shared widely!
(Ed. Admittedly, I was not a big WHAM! or George Michael fan back in the day - though my “days” then were actually nights spent driving around a lot on the graveyard shift with a small portable radio on the dashboard…definitely a story for another time…)
So, Mr. Briscoe has been a subscriber to this newsletter for awhile, and I try to reciprocate with other Substack writers as often as possible. I guess I noted he was in the UK and thought that was cool, I read some of his stuff and didn’t think a lot about it other than it was interesting. I suppose I sort of thought, “Oh, some youngish dude from The Sceptred Isle wants to read a Substack for beginning guitarists. Great, hope I can help….” LOLOLOLOL - I could not have been more arrogantly self-misinformed…
In my defense, I likely looked at his “About” page, and I suppose I may be forgiven for that perception since he doesn’t mention that he is an audio engineer, a guitarist with a band that had a contract with a record label, has a Spotify playlist of his music, and hung out with some of the biggest “names” in the biz….
Cheeky, Nic! … but self effacing, humble folks, no matter their fame or lack thereof always have a place in my heart, so… here we go!
Ed. - these have no commentary from me (and they need none!) - it’s solely links to Mr.Briscoe’s series that I found really interesting and well done…

Part 4:
Please share Mr. Briscoe’s Substack posts with your readers or anywhere else on social media that you write or post! I think it would be better to share at least Part 1, and let readers work their own way through the others, but feel free to chart your own course, only as a last resort linking to this “Special Edition” - Mr. Briscoe deserves all the credit for his spectacular works!!
Cheers and keep playing!!

Michael, thank you. I have to say, I was a bit taken aback when I saw this post in my inbox. I really appreciate that you have taken the time to do this... that's so cool. And I am truly glad that you enjoyed these articles. Publishing them was quite a tough decision. Having said that I feel a sense of relief that this story is now out in the world. I hope others also may enjoy it, and that it may be useful in some way to some one. Thank you again for your support
