Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “The whole world is a bottle” is from the song "Moonshiner” (also known as “The Moonshiner”), a traditional folk song of either, or perhaps both, American or Irish origin, with the music accompanying the lyrics being different in each country. This version is by Uncle Tupelo, the group Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy formed - each artist was featured in previous Michael Acoustic posts: Mr. Tweedy in a May 30th post this year (Jeff Tweedy), and Mr. Farrar in the prior week’s, May 23rd post, (Jay Farrar). “Moonshiner” is Track 8 on the album “March 16–20, 1992”, released in August of 1992, on the Rockville label. Produced by Peter Buck. (Ed. note, Peter Buck, is a guitarist for R.E.M.)

The song has been covered by many artists over the years and is considered a folk classic.

I've been a moonshiner For seventeen long years I've spent all my money On whiskey and beer And I go to some hollow And set up my still If whiskey don't kill me Lord, I don't know what will I go to some bar room To drink with my friends Where the women they can't follow To see what I spend God bless them pretty women I wish they was mine With breath as sweet as The dew on the vine Let me eat when I'm hungry Let me drink when I'm dry Two dollars when I'm hard up Religion when I die The whole world is a bottle And life is but a dram When the bottle gets empty Lord, it sure ain't worth a damn
