Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “If you're thinking of me now I hope you know that I don't need no explanation” is probably a bit more obscure than my usual in this space. Today’s lyric is from "Jamie”, a song by singer/songwriter Kayleigh Goldsworthy as Track 2 on the EP “All These Miles”, released in 2018. The EP was produced by Arun Bali.
“Kayleigh Goldsworthy is a folk-pop singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who got her start as part of the six piece Syracuse indie rock band The Scarlet Ending. After they disbanded, she began her solo career and toured with Against Me!, The Menzingers, The Front Bottoms, and Frank Turner, among others. She released her debut solo album, Burrower, in 2013.
After moving to Nashville in 2016, she began touring as a member of Dave Hause’s band The Mermaid. In 2018, she independently released a solo EP titled All These Miles and embarked on tour with Bayside for their full US acoustic tour, concluding with a headline set at Philadelphia’s legendary World Cafe Live.
She has since settled in Philadelphia, and she continues to tour as both a solo artist and a supporting musician, most recently joining Frank Iero’s new band The Future Violents and recording their 2019 album Barriers.”

For Today
I came to appreciate Ms. Goldsworthy’s music in a sort of roundabout fashion. It started with a video game called “The Flame In The Flood”, sort of a small survival type of game, kinda frustrating, but interesting. The music was just as interesting - the title track was very cool - “The soundtrack for the game was made by Chuck Ragan of the band Hot Water Music.” Credit: Wikipedia Link: Soundtrack YouTube: The Flame In The Flood.
So I found that Mr. Ragan was the also driving force behind “The Revival Tour”, which he described as, “…the tour is about "sharing music together" and "bringing it to people in an extremely honest and grassroots fashion.” Credit Wikipedia Link: ibid - Chuck Ragan link above
And, most interestingly (to me), “The 2011 Revival Tour featured Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem, Dave Hause of The Loved Ones, and Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio,[5] as well as guest appearances from Helen Chambers, Sam Russo, Jimmy Islip, Brian Brody, and Franz Nicolay[15] In 2012, Ragan, Andriano, Laura Jane Grace, Cory Branan, Ben Kweller and Nathaniel Rateliff performed across the United States and Canada for the Tour's spring leg, with guest appearances by Jenny Owen Youngs, Dave Hause, and Kayleigh Goldsworthy.[8] In the autumn of the same year, a European leg of the Tour featured Ragan, Branan, Emily Barker, Rocky Votolato, and Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash.[16] Credit: ibid
So, Mr. Ragan had me at Brian Fallon, one of my favorite artists of all time. Intrigued, I checked out some of the other artists from those tours, and immediately loved Ms. Goldsworthy’s vocals and lyrics. One of her songs, “Where The Summer Goes” (link) became a staple of mine to play as I was trying (Ed. - still am) to master fingerpicking. I featured Ms. Goldsworthy and that song in a previous post on Michael Acoustic. This week I was looking for something a bit different and came upon Ms. Goldsworthy’s EP from 2018, “All These Miles” <(link). Every song on the EP is great, and I was especially drawn to “Jamie” because the fingerpick is very close to the “Calypso” or “island” rhythm that we’ve discussed on here before; where the count is 1 2& (x)& 4& - a syncopated rhythm where the the 3 beat isn’t played at all (but the “and” of the 3 beat is). It can be a bit difficult to pick out, there’s a bass line and another guitar, and probably Ms. Goldsworthy on violin, but it’s basically that pick. Anyway, I liked the song, the accompaniment, her voice, and it’s a pretty fun song to practice working on a fingerpick style . If fingerpicking isn’t your thing you might try just strumming that Calypso pattern, it’s my go-to for just about everything. If you’re just not hearing it in this song, check out the opening riff to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Up Around The Bend”, (<link) and count “One….Two And….And Four And” as you listen.
A Song To Play - “Jamie”
Key of BMaj (originally - capoed on 4 here to GMaj), 4/4 common time, a slow, contemplative 77 BPM. You can play this capoed on 4 to play in the key Ms. Goldsworthy is singing in, which is most likely BMaj, (the one in the lower right hand corner of the Circle of Fifths with 5 sharps…) but could be the relative minor - G#minor. If you play the chord chart below with a capo you can play the chords in the original key. OTOH, she may have liked BMaj because it fit her voice, and if GMaj is a better fit for your voice (definitely is for mine) just leave the capo off and play these chords while singing in GMaj (or maybe the relative Eminor, but it doesn’t really matter…. music theory, good God, y’all, what is it good for?). Note the outro is on the IV chord rather than returning to the I. That’s interesting because it leaves the outro unresolved, which oftentimes can leave us with the same feeling, that is, something hasn’t resolved to an expected conclusion. My guess is that it may have been intentional as the lyrics relate to a mostly unresolved love affair, dunno.
