Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “The light diffused and fractured” is from the song "Ghost In My Room”. Written and performed by Heather Nova, it was recorded sometime in the last year (the credits are a bit vague, 2024 or 2025 at least). Released in the last month - February 2025 - as Track 8 on the album “Breath and Air” on the V2 label. Produced by Chris Bond.
This from Spotify: (Ed. This artist profile appears to be credited to Ms. Nova herself, which is kinda cool. See link below.) ““Singer/songwriter, Heather Nova, first appeared on the scene in the mid 90s with her cello-infused alt rock hit "Walk This World" off her breakout album "Oyster". She has since released 11 critically acclaimed studio albums and three live albums. She tours consistently, maintaining a devoted fanbase. She has played most major European festivals, as well as intimate acoustic gigs in churches and opera houses, and has had her music featured in major TV shows and Hollywood films. She has released a book of her poetry and drawings, and has even been known to show up and play free at hospitals in between tour dates. She now lives back in her home country, Bermuda, and continues to write, record and tour world-wide.”

Ed. - A full sized Gibson (good for her!) - looks like a Hummingbird or Dove, but could be a custom build for her - gorgeous! Note the soundhole pickup in place and the capo on the headstock (I usually keep a Snark there too, but she probably has “people” for that…). From a 2019 appearance - Link: Heather Nova - 2019
Snark: (Ed. - see? It’s not just me…Link: Snark) Ed. Not an endorsement; I receive no consideration or compensation of any sort from anyone, but…just sayin…
Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
Today’s “A Song To Play” is “Ghost In My Room”, a sort of bittersweet song of parting from, and longing for, a lover, though we don’t learn whether the parting is permanent or if reuniting is uncertain. Ms. Nova’s ethereal voice (as we’ve commented in posts featuring her before) is enchanting, with songwriting skills to match. She seems to be one of those artists that’s always there, with a string of albums and hits over the years, but not always a household name. Most of the songs I feature on Michael Acoustic are from 20 - 40 years ago, maybe even earlier in some cases, so a great fresh album from a great artist is an opportunity not to be missed. I’ve long been a fan of Ms. Nova, and I’m glad to see she is still writing and performing great songs.

Some Stuff:

Some Links (Ed. - limited mostly to timely links this week from Music Business Worldwide):
Ed. - Very late breaking news - Mariah Carey has prevailed in a copyright lawsuit over her song, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” against plaintiffs who wrote a song with the same title - link: Mariah Carey Lawsuit (Ed. Takeaway - this was an “own goal” - never piss off a judge by violating your own agreement…just sayin’)
Extra link : “How EADGBE Came To Be” (Note - the article is written under the Fender Musical Instruments Corp. copyright…not a qualitative editorial statement - I own and like Fender products - just sayin’ is all, just sayin’…)
A Song To Play: Heather Nova - “Ghost In My Room”
Key of GMajor, and uses ‘em all but the vii(dim) - (F#dim), 4/4 common time, a seemingly very slow 70 BPM, but Chordify hears only one whole note per measure. So, I think what’s going on is while the background instrumentation holds single notes for a 4 beat measure, Ms. Nova’s strums are certainly filling each measure at a much faster pace. The effect of both sounds great. If you decide to play this song, ignore the tempo shown and play a faster, if somewhat syncopated strum or pick. I played it through a couple times while fingerpicking and it rolls right along. To me, it kind begs for beats 1 and 3 to be emphasized, so…
…have fun!!

"Ghost In My Room"
I'm not alright with distance
But distance had to come
I need your nighttime kisses
The shelter of your arms
I reach out in the darkness
I reach out for your hand
Across the blanket ocean
Want what I cannot have
You're a ghost in my room
I can almost touch you
You're a ghost in my room
In all the places I loved you
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here
I touch the space around me
The emptiness you left
The sheets unchanged beneath me
The pillows where you slept
I see you getting dressed there
I'm standing at the door
Your smile as I tell you
There's nothing I want more
You're a ghost in my room
I can almost touch you
You're a ghost in my room
In all the places I loved you
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here
The whispers and the laughter
Left hanging in the air
The light diffused and fractured
I'm haunted everywhere
You're a ghost in my room
I can almost touch you
You're a ghost in my room
In all the places I loved you
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here
And you're here

Impressive new biker-jacket logo, Michael! According to Discogs, Ms. Nova's latest album has only been released in Germany! Which is meaningless, now, in the world of internat'l streaming! I just found that curious! And, the vinyl, Germans will be thrilled to discover, is available in either orange, green, or blue!
BTW, of the many Chris Bonds and Christopher Bonds extant in the biz (a particular Christopher Bond is credited with having produced many, if not most, of Hall & Oates' '80s recordings...this guy: https://www.discogs.com/artist/403901-Christopher-Bond), I thought your readers might appreciate some differentiation....'tis THIS UK-based Chris Bond who twiddled knobs on the "Breath and Air" Nova album: https://www.discogs.com/artist/2419084-Chris-Bond-5 and https://chrisbondmusic.com/
Happy weekend!
Thanks for the intro to Heather Nova.
My cat does exactly the same thing!
