Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “Can't bring my broken heart to be untrue” is from the song "Hung Up On You”. Written by members of the group Fountains Of Wayne, Adam Schlesinger & Chris Collingwood, the song was performed and recorded by Fountains Of Wayne. The album was recorded all over the place at: Stratosphere Sound, NYC; Q Division, Somerville, MA; and The Clubhouse, Rhinebeck, NY - so I’m not sure where this particular track was recorded. It was released in 2003 as Track 11 on the album “Welcome Interstate Managers” on the the S-Curve Records label, or maybe EMI Music North America - various sources list either or both. Produced by Mike Denneen, Chris Collingwood & Adam Schlesinger..

Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
Today’s “A Song To Play” is “Hung Up On You”, the title being a sort of double entendre, meaning our singer is both in some degree of love with (hung up on) the girl he’s calling, but also she hung up on our hero earlier…so… heartbreak and anguish ensue…but, why?
Cuz songs about lost love and heartbreak that evoke teary, often drunken remorse….wait for it…SELL!!!
Yep, if it ain’t falling in love with your girlfriend Stacy’s mom, the next best thing is getting your heart stomped on, and then she’ll mash that sucker flat….

A Song To Play: - “Hung Up On You”
Last week’s “What I’m Listening To” playlist was entitled, “Welcome To Jimmy’s!”, and was sort of a clue to this week’s A Song To Play - the 3rd verse of Hung Up On You, begins with the line, “Now I'm goin down to Jimmy's bar…”. We know the only thing more popular than lost or found love is getting teary and drunk at a local pub while pining for the lost love version, and we can assume that’s why our hero is heading “down to Jimmy’s” (Ed. - possibly for the umpteenth time this week, and Jimmy knows a dependable source of income when he sees it walkin’ through the door…)
Anyway, Key of GMajor, a really quick 150 BPM, in 4/4 common time. So it moves pretty quickly in tempo but the chord changes are spaced out enough to make them pretty manageable. Very much a country-western flavor, sort of the anti-”Stacy’s Mom” type of song, but really a very cool song to just kind of let it take you places. You’ll see - that’s why you’ll…
…have fun!!

“Hung Up On You”
[Verse 1]
While I down Kentucky bourbon, I am waiting for a call
And the moon and stars tonight are playing shadows on the wall
With the moon the way it is, dear, would you answer out of spite?
Or are you feeling lonely tonight?
Cuz I remember last time we were out under the stars
Driving crooked down the highway, drinking beer in roadside bars
Now and then I wonder why this painful memory
Can never find its way to you from me
[Chorus]
And I can't dial the phone just now, even though I know your number
Can't bring my broken heart to be untrue
Like you did today, you'll say goodbye the same old way
Ever since you hung up on me, I'm hung up on you
[Verse 3]
Now I'm goin down to Jimmy's bar like a thousand other times
With an appetite for poison and a suitcase full of dimes
And I'll wait there by the payphone with one hundred other guys
With those sorry hung up teardrops in our eyes
[Chorus]
And I can't dial the phone just now, even though I know your number
Can't bring my broken heart to be untrue
Like you did today, you'll say goodbye the same old way
Ever since you hung up on me, I'm hung up on you
[Outro]
Ever since you hung up on me, I'm hung up on you

This Week’s Conversation With Mika, The Cat:
Me: “Wow - if Van Gogh were still alive he’d paint a picture that made you look beautiful and precocious!”
Mika: “I’m already beautiful and precocious…“
Me: “Maybe Picasso, then…
Mika: “Yeah, that’s better….”
Cheers and keep playing!!
