Last week’s rando lyric: The lyric, “When I was a young boy” is from the song "It’s Money That Matters”, written and performed by Randy Newman. It was released in September of 1988 as Track 11 on the album “Land Of Dreams”. Produced by Mark Knopfler, who also played guitar on this and other tracks. Other producers on the album: James Newton Howard, Jeff Lynne, Tommy LiPuma

This is a screen capture from the video, that’s Mark Knopfler with (maybe) the famous ‘61 Strat - though it may also be a normie Fiesta Red Stratocaster that he used as a prop for the shot of him riding around in what I think is Mr. Newman’s Red 1955 Buick Super Convertible.
Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
Randy Newman always has something to say, and he says it with a flair for the odd but uniquely tongue in cheek! This song is a favorite, and I may have featured it a few years ago, but it got in my head and now it’s in yours…

Some Stuff:

Mark Knopfler’s birthday was Wednesday - Happy Birthday, Mr. Knopfler! Pretty sure that’s the real ‘61 Strat….
A Song To Play:
4/4 common time, Key of DMajor, a quick 130 Beats Per Minute, pretty repetitive chords, but gets a little sporty around the bridge. Note A# is just Bb.
…have fun!!

From Genius Link: It's Money That Matters
[Verse 1] Of all of the people that I used to know Most never adjusted to the great big world I see 'em lurking in bookstores Workin' for the public radio Carryin' their babies around in sacks on their backs Movin' careful and slow [Chorus] It's money that matters Hear what I say It's money that matters In the USA [Bridge] All of these people are much brighter than I In any fair system they would flourish and thrive But they barely survive They eke out a living They barely survive [Verse 2] When I was a young boy, maybe thirteen I took a hard look around me, asked "What does it mean?" So I talked to my father, he didn't know I talked to my friend, he didn't know I talked to my brother, he didn't know Talked to everybody that I knew [Chorus] It's money that matters Now you know that it's true It's money that matters Whatever you do [Verse 3] I talked to a man lived up on the county line I was washin' his car with a friend of mine He was a little fat guy in a red jumpsuit I said, "That looks kinda funny" He said, "I know it does too But I got a great big house on the hill here Great big blonde wife inside it Great big pool in my back yard Another great big pool beside it [Chorus] "Sonny, it's money that matters Hear what I say It's money that matters In the USA It's money that matters Now you know that it's true It's money that matters Whatever you do"
