Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “What is real by now” is from the song "Back Into Your World”, written by Jay Farrar and performed by the band Son Volt. It is Track 2 on the album “Straightaways”, released in April of 1997 on the Warner Brothers label. Produced by Brian Paulson and Son Volt.

The song also appears on the album “A Retrospective 1995-2000” released in 2005.

Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
Link: Son Volt Austin, TX Concert review from 2015 that mentions “Back Into Your World”
I’ve written about Jay Farrar and his sometimes fretful career as a solo artist, and with Uncle Tupelo, then Son Volt and now apparently on his own with live gig in Spain in July.

…and Son Volt is still around in some form with a new album out in March of this year:
“Jay Farrar & Shannon McNally have collaborated on a new album, ‘Don’t Ya Take It Too Bad’ on Jay’s own Tramsmit Sound label” Ed. - yeah, it’s spelled that way on his artist page…
So, “Back Into Your World” is a cool song, and I enjoyed playing it (capoed on the first fret, anyway….) - give it a shot…

Some Stuff:

A Song To Play:
So…. the somewhat unlikely key of Db….4/4 common time, and a sprightly 120 BPM (that’s pretty quick - work up to it…). Keep in mind a capo on the first fret will transpose the song to CMajor (or you could just play the whole thing in CMajor without a capo…it’s worth a subscription to Chordify just to make simple ones out of overly complex ones…). This song is probably in Db because it fit Mr. Farrar’s voice better - I don’t know that, but it’s the only reason I can think of, absent pure self abuse….just sayin’…
I like this song a lot - interesting lyrics that may or may not be comprehensible only to Mr. Farrar’s specific memory, but it sounded…wistful… to me. Fun to play, maybe, in Db - it’s not like I would know - I just played it transposed to CMaj and had a great time with it. You can hear the sorta melancholy mood through the chord changes, but that complements the more-or-less hopeful, but kinda demanding, “let’s try this again” lyrics really well. I think Mr. Farrar is a great, if somewhat underrated musician and lyricist. Have fun with it, strummed or picked - it certainly found the mood of the lyrics for me.
Just make sure to ….
…have fun!!

Lyrics Genius Link: Back Into Your World
Living for the moment
It flashes and fades
And takes you down
Familiar deserted byways
Shelf-stored memories
Lead you where you been
No long ago
And guess who's guessing now?
Let me back into your world
At the blink of the eye
No uncertain terms
Let me back into your world
You should know
What is real by now
Let the judges meet their makers
Can't slow down
Burning that four-barrel speed
A battle cry to treat this absence
Let me back into your world
At the blink of the eye
No uncertain terms
Let me back into your world
Spent the promises
Spent the meantime
Through ins and outs
Of halfway house boundaries
Leave this impasse
If you're gonna leave anything
Just don't leave here
Without speaking your mind
Let me back into your world
At the blink of the eye
No uncertain terms
Let me back into your world
