Last week’s rando lyric: The lyric, “You’re not listening anyway” is from the song "Acoustic #3”, written and performed by the Goo Goo Dolls. It’s Track 10 on the 1998 album “Dizzy Up The Girl”.
Produced by Rob Cavallo and Goo Goo Dolls

From Genius (Link: Goo Goo Dolls): “The Goo Goo Dolls are an American rock band formed in 1986 in Buffalo, NY, during one of Buffalo’s most prolific underground music phases. The band was formed by John Rzeznik (Also known as Johnny Rzeznik), lead singer and songwriter for the band, with bassist/vocalist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska. Mike Malinin later replaced Tutuska as the band’s drummer.”
Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
I think I’ve done some songs off of the “Dizzy Up The Girl” album, maybe even this one…
This is post #345 for me, so even if I forgot I may have already featured this song: sorry, not sorry… I like the song, I needed to break out of a brief country song rut and this is a great one to do just that. Simple, easy chords - and I think that’s important when writing a heartfelt, gut check song, even if it’s not reflective of a lived experience. If the words are compelling and speak to an emotion common to many, cluttering it up with too much accompaniment sort of defeats the purpose. Simple and heartfelt is a difficult task for songwriters - the result can be too close to the bone sometimes.

Some Stuff:

A Song To Play:
Key of G Major, 4/4 common time, supposedly 125 BPM, but the vocals make it sound slower I think. Great song to fingerpick or flat pick - note the picked, arpeggiated intro and under the cello/violins the whole way through. If there is a percussion backing it’s very muted, maybe just a hint of ride cymbal. Very cool song for just a solo guitarist - the string accompaniment is nice, but the picked guitar just fits.
“An arpeggio is a type of chord in which the notes that compose a chord are individually sounded in a progressive rising or descending order.” From Wikipedia
Above all, just…
…have fun!!
From Genius Link: Acoustic #3
[Verse 1] They painted up your secrets With the lies they told to you And the least they ever gave you Was the most you ever knew And I wonder where these dreams go When the world gets in your way What’s the point in all this screaming? No one’s listening anyway [Verse 2] Your voice is small and fading And you’re hiding here alone And your mother loves your father ‘Cause she’s got nowhere to go And she wonders where these dreams go ‘Cause the world got in her way What’s the point in ever trying? Nothing’s changing anyway [Verse 3] They press their lips against you And you love the lies they say And I tried so hard to reach you But you’re falling anyway And you know I see right through you ‘Cause the world gets in your way What’s the point in all this screaming? You’re not listening anyway

“It’s never really final - you just run out of things you can bear to change…”
What a hoot! Mika looking her best owl for us! I enjoyed the Goo Goo Dolls song, Michael...and, both versions. Never paid much attention to them, when they were in their heyday. It strikes me as odd that he/they'd name a song so generically...."Acoustic #3"....would seem to dissuade folks from covering it, methinks! I just checked....seems I'm right: Only 4 covers of the song in its 27 years (but, it would seem Master Rzeznik is right also....SOMEBODY covered it!): https://secondhandsongs.com/work/159415/versions
Two acapella groups, including The Stanford Harmonics, and a group called Iron Horse, who recorded (with banjo!) a bluegrass arrangement on a 2009 compilation called "A Boy Named Blue--The Bluegrass Tribute to The Goo Goo Dolls"! That's here: https://youtu.be/wE-wkbecOtI
Plus, there's been one instrumental.
Whew! You got me workin' on a Friday, Michael! What's THAT about?!😂 Enjoy! And, thanks!
