Last week’s rando lyrics: The lyric, “You gotta face that erases The need for the buyin’” is from the song "Turn Me Loose”, by The Record Company. Written by Alex Stiff, Chris Vos, Marc Cazorla (Ed. - the members of The Record Company), it’s Track 7 on the album “Give It Back To You", released in February 2016. Produced by Alex Stiff, Chris Vos, Marc Cazorla, recorded at TRC Studios (get it?) Credit: Genius Link >The Record Company<
Welcome to The Regular Friday post!
For Today:
I saw The Record Company in concert a number of years ago, small venue, they weren’t well known at the time - great show! I think they are one of those bands that everyone knows of, but somehow they stay a bit out of the limelight. Looks like they have a few tour dates on the East coast and southern states, and one in California. All are dates in May - if you’re close, they’re a great show.
It’s been a bit of a week around here, paying local property taxes for the year, writing checks, snaking a stubborn blocked drain… I could go on…but... finalized Federal taxes, be writing the Feds a check soon. Meh, what ya gonna do……
I was looking through old chord charts for a song to play and leafed through some charts from my church praise band days. I’ve promised myself that I wouldn’t neglect those songs because it’s likely I have a few praise band members, past or present, among my readers. Regardless of your religious outlook, a praise band for contemporary services is a great place to get some live-in-front-of-an-audience experience. They’re usually on the less complex side, with a lot of repetition, so good beginner/intermediate player songs (and the audience is usually pretty forgiving, just sayin’…) - just try not to drive your bandmates crazy. That’s good advice for any performance - show up ready to play, having rehearsed whatever you know you’re going to play, and do your best (or sit it out) if there’s a surprise piece.
A Song To Play:
I think this live performance is pretty close to the Chordify chart that follows, which was also a live performance, but there may be a few differences in timing. Probably good for a once or twice through - written by Matt Maher from the album “Empty & Beautiful”, Key of GMaj, 4/4 time, a pretty quick 129 BPM, really only 4 chords, the I, IV, V, and vi-. I think there is an anomalous Gm in there but I imagine that’s just some Chordify errata. I always liked the song and it’s fun to play. (Ed. I always liked this YouTube video because he tells the audience to clap on the 2 and 4, but there’s always someone…..)
Great Things
My soul proclaims Your greatness, Lord
Rejoicing in my Saviour
Your mercy belongs to those who fear Your Son
His blessings You have given them forever
And holy is His name, holy is His name
You alone have done great things
I can't boast of anything
Mighty one, and King of kings, Jesus
You alone have done great things
By Your living word in me
Mighty One, and King of kings, Jesus
My soul proclaims Your greatness, Lord
Rejoicing in my Saviour
Your mercy belongs to those who fear Your Son
His blessings You have given them forever
And holy is His name, holy is His name
You alone have done great things
I can't boast of anything
Mighty one, and King of kings, Jesus
You alone have done great things
By Your living word in me
Mighty One, and King of kings, Jesus
And it's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
And it's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
And it's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out
You alone have done great things
I can't boast of anything
Mighty one, and King of kings, Jesus
You alone have done great things
By Your living word in me
Mighty One, and King of kings, Jesus
And it's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out loud
It's Your name we're shouting out
Shouting out

From the MLC:
MLC Webinars - The MLC is the Mechanical Licensing Collective, and they’re kind of a big deal for musicians and lots of other folks in the recording industry. If you are a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist (even drummers!), producer, anyone who has a connection to recorded music that will be streamed or sold in other ways, and you may have a financial interest in that music, these webinars (there are 4) may be very valuable and interesting for you. Even if you don’t but you want to know how the world of making money from music works, it could very well be worth your time.
From Fender:
Match The Guitar — This is pretty cool - there are some ads from Fender that are part of the URL that I couldn’t edit out, so if you’re looking for a new tele or strat, I guess… it’s not like they’re paying me. Just sayin’…
From Blues Guitar Unleashed:
The Stairway Changes Yeah, that “stairway”…

Promoting Your Song Release - If you’re an indie artist, no one’s gonna do this stuff for you. If you’re with a label, they will, but not out of kindness, I suppose….
From Songtown:
Overcoming Writer's Block - At some point, we’re all going to need a little advice about this - it’s just the way it is…

From American Songwriter:
Navigating "Almosts" This is pretty cool - if you’re serious about your songwriting, you’re gonna run into a few of these along the way…better to know now.
From Carvin Audio:
Arrange For Mixing - Your audio engineer is going to be very happy if you do this and you’ll be happier with the result…
Double Stops - Not sure, this may be behind a paywall - I lose track of which of Acoustic Guitar’s stuff I’m getting in emails and which on Patreon, worth it if you play and record with an acoustic…
From Sean Daniel:
Playing a C chord - Yeah, sounds easy, but you might learn some cool stuff here…

Love The Record Company. They seem like they have a strong, loyal fanbase. A great blend of rock, soul, blues. Also, I literally finished going through hundreds of receipts for my taxes at2am last night. It was fairly torturous. Thank goodness for music!
Thanks for the shoutout, Michael, much appreciated.
