38 Special, eh Michael? Do these recollections just pop into your head? Do you hear these songs "randomly" and then write about them? What is the source?
All that said, I thought about you, Steve Goldberg and our other facetime comrads when I struck up a conversation with a muscian at my gym. He saw my Pink Floyd DSOM shirt and commented, and the conversation took off from there. He's a guitarist/singer with a band that plays local clubs. We shot the bull about music, musicians, guitars (man, guitarists are fanatics about their instruments), etc.
Anyway, the point is how music resonates with all of us. A "rando" friendship brought together by the power of music. Pretty cool, eh?
That’s it exactly! There is always a song in my head, it changes 3 or 4 times or more daily - sometimes a memory or sometimes just some rando lyrics float through for no reason. When one song pops in that seems like it would be a good beginner or intermediate guitarist challenge that I can find a video, chord chart and lyrics for, that’s it!!
That's so interesting, Michael. Do you think your life-long interest in music has sort of "wired" or trained your brain to this kind of sensibility? To think this way?
I have a similar thought process when it comes to ideas for me to write about. My diverse interests ushers in random thoughts, and I think "that might be something to write about!" Then I go about the process of what unique angle I might take.
Kind of a spotty “interest” over a life time. Always loved music, but mostly only as a listener. Only in the last 8 or 9 years as personal circumstances changed did I get serious about guitar lessons, music theory classes and songwriting/recording, etc.
First, Michael.....for you and your readers: The Outlaws or 38 Special? Go.
Thanks so much for the mention! The Tune Tags are such a gas to participate in and compose! In fact, I'm a couple weeks ahead...composing, finishing, and scheduling for a Tuesday post a couple weeks in the future; which means I get to dig it at the moment, "put 'er to bed," and enjoy it all over again with my readers when it drops!!
The one you helped me on drops this Tuesday....Our Tune Tag guest 2/6 is Nic Briscoe, who pens the music-forward "The Song's the Thing" (https://nicbriscoe.substack.com/), and he's been kind enough to fill us in on some amazing places he's worked (like London-based recording studios in the '80s!).
We also uncover some astoundingly little-known factoids (yes, I mean more than one!) about a certain famous Brit recording artist, and we "meet" a 150-year-old piano that we've heard on hits by The Beatles, Queen, Bowie, and many more! Nic's actually played that particular piano! You see and hear it Tuesday!
Your readers, Michael, will be happy to know you helped me ferret out some keys a certain song was played in, and by a couple different artists! As you know, we'll hear (and see!) a longtime star (who routinely wrote songs on his guitar) play a song he wrote on the piano (USING ONLY THE BLACK KEYS!)
Thanks again for all your help, Michael....your fortunate readers are in good musical hands!🎵Join us, gang, every Tuesday, for a brand new Tune Tag, and this Tuesday, for Nic's reveal of his time at Trident Studios and other surprises!
38 Special! Those lyrics are a little generic (no offense) so it was tough to narrow down. I’ve written before about 38 Special myself — Hold On Loosely — so do appreciate their earworm ready countrified southern pop-rock sound. If only Earworms could hold on loosely, then I’d be out of a newsletter!
As always, appreciate your posts and especially what you say about forming a community of other folks to get together with regularly and discuss issues related to a common topic.
I was always a big fan of The Paper Chase. In my best Kingsfield voice, “You teach yourselves the Rando Lyrics, I teach you to think like Rando Lyrics solvers….”

Referencing the former Mrs Springsteen, perhaps? Dunno!
I did an email interview with Nic awhile ago - what an interesting character - in the eye of the storm during his time for sure
