I saw Harry Chapin perform live twice. Of course, he included "Taxi" as his last number.

I could be wrong, but as memory serves in the performances I saw , the "I tell you why baby's crying" line was delivered by the great bassist Donald (Duck) Dunn. But it was a long, long time ago.

Jim - Lucky!! Fabulous that you got to see him! I think it’s the same guy in both videos - he’s definitely the bass player in the first one, the second one with the sequel is likely him too - it’s just kinda poor quality so I didn’t want to say definitively. What a great voice!!! I always thought the vocalist was a female studio singer, maybe overdubbed. Cool to learn it was him! Thanks!

John Wallace, Chapin's bass player, did the falsetto part.

"Taxi" was a sign of things to come from Chapin, whose catalogue is full of lengthy story songs like this that defy the limits of top 40 single conventions.

My favorite songs are from songwriters like Mr. Chapin who ignored the formula, defied the conventional - Don McClean, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler come to mind first, but many others as well
